Don’t Blame the Mom
by Chelsea Pegues
There’s no doubt that the true crime genre now has a permanent grip on the podcasting realm. According to Apple Podcasts, they currently stream over two hundred true crime shows, and a Pew Research Center poll from 2023 reflects that 34 percent of U.S. adults consume this kind of content. At this point, if you’re not a fan, you might be wondering what on earth is wrong with all of us weirdos? What exactly is so enticing about listening to stories about the worst day of someone else's life? And how could some of us actually find this…entertaining?
If you spent even five minutes chatting with Hannah and Kate, hosts of the Don’t Blame the Mom podcast, you’d gain a clearer picture (and answers to the aforementioned questions) almost immediately. Based in the London area, the pair have been friends for over a decade. Kate’s official name on the show is “Irish Kate” a moniker Hannah bestowed on her cohost to celebrate her homeland (and enviable accent, to those of us with American ears). The dynamic between these two is immediately endearing and full of truly hilarious— and enjoyable— banter.
